The Stanford Chronicle (“the Chronicle,” “we,” “us”) is an independent digital magazine published at stanfordchronicle.com. This policy explains what information we and our service providers collect when you read the Chronicle, subscribe to the Weekly Digest, or comment on our stories, how that information is used, and the choices you have. The Chronicle is not affiliated with or endorsed by Stanford University.
Information we collect
- Information you give us. When you subscribe to the Weekly Digest, we collect your email address. When you leave a comment, we collect the name, email address and any website you provide, along with your comment. When you write to us, we receive whatever you include in your message, such as tips, photographs or story ideas.
- Information collected automatically. Like most websites, our servers and service providers record technical information when you visit, such as your IP address, browser type, device type, referring page, the pages you view and the time of your visit. Some of this is gathered through cookies and similar technologies, described below.
How we use information
- To publish and deliver the magazine, and to send the Weekly Digest and other newsletters you have asked for.
- To display and moderate comments and to protect the site against spam and abuse.
- To understand which stories readers find valuable and to improve the site.
- To show advertising that helps fund our journalism.
- To respond to your messages and to comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell your email address or the contents of your messages to anyone.
Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. We and our partners use them to keep the site working (for example, remembering that you are signed in to comment), to measure readership, and to serve and measure advertising. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; parts of the site may not work as intended if you do.
Advertising and Google AdSense
The Chronicle uses Google AdSense to display advertisements. Google and its partners, as third-party vendors, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website and other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this and other sites on the internet, and those ads may be personalized to your interests.
To learn how Google uses information from sites that use its services, see How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services. You can opt out of personalized advertising from Google by visiting Google Ads Settings, and you can opt out of some other third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalized advertising at www.aboutads.info/choices. If you opt out, you will still see ads, but they will be less relevant to you.
Analytics and site services
The Chronicle is hosted by WordPress.com, operated by Automattic, and uses Jetpack features for site statistics, security, newsletters and comments. These services collect information such as IP addresses and page views to generate aggregate traffic statistics and to deliver the site. We may also use Google services, such as Google Analytics and Search Console, to understand how readers find and use the site. These providers process information under their own privacy policies, including Automattic’s Privacy Policy and Google’s Privacy Policy.
The Weekly Digest and other newsletters
Newsletter subscriptions are managed through WordPress.com and Jetpack. We use your email address only to send the newsletters you chose and occasional notices about your subscription. Newsletter emails may record whether a message was opened or a link was clicked so that we can understand what readers find useful. Every newsletter includes a link to unsubscribe, and you can also write to us to be removed.
Comments
If you leave a comment, your name, comment and any website you provide are published alongside the story. Your email address is not published. Comments may be checked by an automated spam-detection service (Akismet, operated by Automattic). An anonymized string created from your email address (a “hash”) may be sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you have a Gravatar profile picture; if you do, it may appear next to your comment.
Embedded content from other sites
Stories may include embedded content, such as videos, images, maps or social media posts. Embedded content behaves as if you had visited the other website directly, and that site may collect data about you, use cookies and track your interaction with the embedded content.
How long we keep information
We keep newsletter subscriptions until you unsubscribe. Published comments and their metadata are kept indefinitely so that conversations remain intact, unless you ask us to remove them. Technical logs and analytics data are kept by our service providers according to their own retention schedules.
Your choices and rights
You may unsubscribe from our newsletters at any time, ask to see the personal information we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it, by emailing editor@stanfordchronicle.com. We will respond within a reasonable time and as required by applicable law.
California and other U.S. state residents. Depending on where you live, laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act) may give you the right to know what personal information is collected about you, to request access to it, to request its correction or deletion, and to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not sell personal information for money. The use of advertising cookies by Google and its partners may be considered “sharing” under some state laws; you can limit it through Google Ads Settings, your browser’s cookie controls, or a Global Privacy Control signal where supported. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights. To make a request, email us at the address below.

Children’s privacy
The Chronicle is written for a general adult audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
